Objectives

POPAI Hungary announced a design competition for young Industrial Design Engineering students. The objective was to create and design a Zewa sustainable display. Students had to use materials, solutions that are sustainable and the communication itself had to be about sustainability. It was possible to place either Zewa products (toilet papers, handkerchiefs, household towels) on the display. Essity provided the Zewa sustainability key visual and also the eco labels that Zewa uses: FSC certificate and 100% recyclable packaging logos.
During the designing of the display the obligatory technical parameters (e.g. size of the display) and Zewa brand visuals and guidelines had to be considered.
 

How were the objectives met?

Environmental protection and sustainability are today’s main objectives, however their real purpose stay hidden while we only focus on saving the nature from the man made waste tsunami. Of course things like recycling are important too, but it’s better to prevent than cure. In case of products, sustainability can only come true, if we keep in controll their whole lifecycle, from step one to the last (and this also can be the first step in a new process). We have to show all of these product life periods so people can see what really helps and what just look like it does. The goods of Zewa are mainly paper based and it is known that paper is made of wood, so the origin of the trees for that is a critical point. As I have looked into it, I found out that the comapny uses responsible sources for it’s wood supply, but they don’t emphasize it that much. Because of this I decided that I have to show everyone that paper producing can be a serious harm to the nature, if manufacturers don’t think the way Zewa does. And the best way to make people think more about trees is to show them one. Using this symbol hopefully do it’s best, and we are going to think more before acting.
