Objectives
POPAI Hungary announced a design competition for young Industrial Design Engineering students. The objective was to create and design a Zewa sustainable display. Students had to use materials, solutions that are sustainable and the communication itself had to be about sustainability. It was possible to place either Zewa products (toilet papers, handkerchiefs, household towels) on the display. Essity provided the Zewa sustainability key visual and also the eco labels that Zewa uses: FSC certificate and 100% recyclable packaging logos.
During the designing of the display the obligatory technical parameters (e.g. size of the display) and Zewa brand visuals and guidelines had to be considered.
How were the objectives met?
The picture that comes to the mind of an average customer when they hear the word „eco-friendly” or „sustainable” is rarely a premium quality plastic, glowing display that advertises one use only hygene products, but that’s exactly the case with my design and it’s for a good reason The main principle of my design is to achive sustainability through the use of reusable and recyclable materials, that has low pollutant emission production and in addition create a display, that is attractive for the customers, who care about they loved-ones and the Earth too.
I created a modular system from a single triangule shaped repeating part, so the display can be assembled and reassembled in various shapes (depending on a new product, season, campaign or the brand), but I will describe only one construction in detail, that is made specially for ZEWA Softis paper tissues.
The transparent parts make the structure feel airy, clean and premium quality and the graphic design supports the feel of care and hygene, which are the main messages of ZEWA. The display has slightly sticking out shelves, that offers the product for the customers and makes the accessibility easy for everyone. Behind the cardboard layer, there is a LED strip that lights up the inside of the display, highlighting the products (strictly speaking LED strips aren’t fully sustainable, but the stunning effect of light scattering inside of the crystal clear plastic and the low energy need compansates the negative effects).
